This anime never really caught my attention but I read somewhere that is was depressing to an extent.

Yeah, it's getting to that point actually.

It wasn't dark in the beginning like it is now. I was re-reading the series just to find the part where it dramatically changes, and I think the story takes that route when Natsume and Mikan return from the 'Hana-Arc.' After that the story took the turn for the worst and wound up like it is currently. *sigh*
