Touhou Stuff

I think it's impossible to even talk about Japanese media without somewhere mentioning Touhou, Idolm@ster, and Vocaloid.

Anyways, I saw this and thought it was pretty cool, especially considering that it's fan-made.

It's currently #1 on Nico's hourly rankings. I guess it's just another testament to what those darn Japanese can do with enough resources (like building a full-scale Gundam).

Btw, yes I know all of the characters by name (just like any sensible Touhou fan would).

I simply just don't understand what makes Touhou so popular. Just don't get it.
Also, only two characters I could recognize would be Cirno and Reimu.

Touhou is popular partially because it's about 99% fan-made. Sure ZUN provides the games and provides the characters, but the fans just take it and go completely wild with it, making character quirks and memes that eventually just become fanon. Most of it is simply because there's something for everyone, whether it be the original games, the music, characters, doujin stuff, etc. It's easy for anyone to say that they "don't like Touhou," but that's almost like someone saying that they "don't like anime." Someone who "doesn't like anime" can still enjoy one or two series here and there, and there's a lot of that in Touhou (a fairly good number of them don't even play the games).

Either way, for something that took up almost 1/3 of C76, I'm surprised that not too many people here have any idea what it's about.
