I don't read manga, if you look at my anime list and go to the Manga list I think I only have like 5 things listed. But anyways, the Gantz anime was retarded from a aesthetic viewpoint, and the ending sucked, but the plot was ok. The biggest redeeming factor that really helped me watch the whole thing is that, although I don't like dubs, this show was hilarious to watch in English. I swear Kei didn't stop yelling the whole show and not only that, I think the directors told the actor to just throw in swear words every other word, so yeah it was funny. If you liked the manga then it's probably worth it from what I'm told but, like a lot of anime adaptations that can't go on very long, it does end and so they had to create an ending that didn't exist in the manga apparently.

EDIT: Wow I misread your post, read this post from the viewpoint that I thought you were asking "If I should watch the anime since I liked the manga".

I read/watched this show soooooo long ago out of curiosity for the hype. I honestly think the funniest part was actually in the first episode in which Kei(?) gets decapitated by a train. I remember his head was just kinda flying off and I was like... lol... disbelief.

From a business standpoint, Gantz is a great idea - it's got copious amounts of action with sex/nudity thrown around to keep all the guys watching. Sadly, that's about all there is to it. I don't believe that action and/or sex alone are enough to make a series meaningful, much less the best series of all time. To me it seems more like blatant pandering to their target audience. Understandably, I knew a lot of people back in high school who had this as their undoubtedly #1 favorite show EVER. However, if you ask them now, none of them can understand why they liked it back then (I'm convinced that it was the sex) and most of them actually look back on it now as a pretty dumb series. I really don't want to say that it's a series that you "grow out of," but history has shown me that that's actually the case with this one.

I don't really have a problem accepting that a lot of people like this series, but it's definitely not for me.

Lol I thought the anime was okay when I watched it. I despised that ending so badly lol. To the point where I said no way they would end a show like this and went to the manga to read and man the manga is amazing lol re reading the old chapters all the way to the new( think 300s now).
