Spring 2014: "I finally won't be out of town" season

Post  Chumara on Tue Mar 25, 2014 5:26 am

So, since I have time now, and won't be out of town like I've been for the previous 3 seasons, let's do this now instead of 2 weeks late.

As always...........

Sequels
JOOOOOOOOOOOOOJOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOS: There's nothing really to say about this, simply awesome.
Love Live 2: This show was my only 10/10 of it's season, of course my personal bias to idol shows (realistic ones at least [looking at you akb0048 and Aikatsu]). Been looking forward to this sequel for a year now.
Date a Live 2: The first season was fun, silly, but fun. I liked the characters for the most part and the idea of having everyone make choices a la dating sims is entertaining. Not a dreaded sequel by any means.

For the new stuff, I'm reaching.......... reaching HARD. The season actually looks pretty lackluster aside from the sequels, and I'm really just holding out till what looks to be an amazing summer season. Anyways, on to the struggle:
New Stuff
Inugami-san to Nekoyama-san: Five minute lezzy shorts, why not.
Mahou Shoujo Taisen: I'm partial to magical girls, and Gainax has been interesting to follow as of late. The idea of the character designs being voted on via pixiv interests me as well, hoping for a good combination of plot and characters to carry this show well.
Blade and Soul: My body is ready for the worst thing ever.
Bokura wa Minna Kawaisou: Brains Base has been kind of weak to me lately, they had a decent show with SNAFU RomCom, but everything surrounding that has been average to bad. Between this show and one that I'll note later, I'm not sure if I can keep up with this studio like I have been recently with two shows, but they do a good job at enticing me with the synopses.
Akuma no Riddle: Premise is interesting, and I'm still liking what Diomedea pops out with their recent productions of Problem Children and Mental Choices (mainly Mental Choices being amazing)
Selector Infected Wixoss: WTF IS MOE HORROR? J.C. Staff, always..... or maybe a 90% winner in my book, and lolis playing card games. This all sounds like either the best or one of the worst things ever.
Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei: Madhouse + Magic, where have I seen this combination before......... OH SHI-. At least Elisa sings the ED.
Kamigami no Asobi: This is the other Brains Base show I was mentioning, and it's a reverse harem. Normally this would be way off my radar, but I'm in it for Saori Hayami as lead who has basically taken up Noto Mamiko's spot in my heart as of recent, mainly because she's not getting any big roles. This could be too hard for me to watch and get dropped, but I'll check it out as a change of pace from what I normally watch.
Soredemo Sekai wa Utsukushii: I like this premise, but studio pierrot behind it gives me bad feelings. Let's hope that it turns out alright anyways. Includes that newcomer who voiced the robot in Space Dandy, so maybe she'll become a big things in the near future.
Haikyuu!!: Production IG + Sports? Been good so far, let's keep it going.
Baby Steps: Pierrot + Sports? Doesn't sound good, but throw in some romance? Let's check it out.
Brynhildr in the Darkness: REACHING, I've been liking Arms lately, and the plot seems somewhat interesting. Throw one more in the pool.
Isshukan Friends: Whoops, missed this Brains Base one as well. I liked the movie 50 First Dates, and my favorite anime ef a Tale of Memories employed recurring memory loss perfectly. Again, this premise is what I want, but I feel like Brains Base won't hold back on making it as boring and lackluster as possible.
Mangaka-san to Assistant-san to: I'm hoping this will be anywhere near as funny as Koe no Shigoto, doubt it, but I'll give it a chance.
Black Bullet: This staff will carry the shit out of this show....... I hope. Everything sounds good except the synopsis, which might just not sounds that great in writing. I want this to be good so badly, pleeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaassssssssssseeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.
No Game No Life: This sounds terrible, but I'm in it for the art, OP, Noto Mamiko, and the possibility I'll just drop it really fast.
Gochuumon wa Usagi Desuka?: Is this my Slice of Life show of the season? I hope so, but the writer of Kamen no Maid Guy, Kampfer and Milky Holmes being on the staff screams stupidity.
Nanana's Buried Treasure: My A-1 Pictures pick of the season, synopsis doesn't sound bad either, but the writer having just done ImoCho.... eyughhhh. Again, also on board for Noto Mamiko and Sphere.
Mekaku City Actors: Not a lot of info on this show in terms of what the hell it's about, but I'm in it for the hype, staff, and SHAFT.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So I managed to get to 22 shows, but much like a good 3/4 shows I dropped last season, that list could definitely go down. I was able to pick up a couple of good shows that I hadn't taken a look at last season to replace a couple of my drops, but I don't see anything that could possibly be replacements this time around, so any drops will probably not get replaced.

As always, I pray to O-Haruhi-sama that the shows end up good and don't make me regret giving them a chance.

Oh, and I dunno if you noticed, but Aya Hirano voiced Weekend in Witch Craft Works, and is coming back in two shows this season, neither of which I'm watching though.

I didn't read any of that but I might watch a few ep1s and maybe even a 2nd episode of something. Maybe if the name is interesting enough.

That magic card needs to be errata'd, the way it's written isn't up to current mtg standards, and could easily include more text.

Sequels:
DAL2: And here I thought I was the only one who watched this
LL2: Yeah, I guess.

New stuff:
Kenzen Robo Daimidaler: This sounds so bad that I'm actually going to watch.
Mangaka-san to Assistant-san to: I actually had fun reading the comics, so I'm cautiously optimistic.
Selector Infected Wixoss: WTF is this?
Black Bullet: I heard about it, might as well check it out.
No Game No Life: God tier casting.
Hitsugi no Chaika: Loli coffins, sure why not.
Mekaku City Actors: SHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAFFFFFFFFFFFFT!

Maybe:
Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei: I genuinely tried to read the books, but got bored half to death. Then he became a ninja or something.

9 shows with a possible 10th. Not great, but not bad either.

Maybe whatever show we end up talking about this season isn't one that's giving me a hemorrhage.

When he said he was born in April and her in March, I hope he doesn't mean of the same year, that is pretty much impossible.
I love Saori Hayami, mainly since her role in Red Data Girl, so I can't complain.
I feel the animation style and overall visual quality is better than Mahou Sensou, but much like that show, it could go to the gutters later on. Then again, maybe the staff realized how much of an abortion that crap was and just focused their efforts on this instead halfway through.

Oh and... I also hope they're not actually siblings at this point. They have 11 episodes to pull the adoptive sister or cousin card at least.

Anyways, by all accounts this show is better than Mahou Sensou at episode 1, let's keep it that way Madhouse!

EDIT: Oh, apparently the show is 26 eps, whoops.

The book series sells like hotcakes, so they're trying to get all they can outta this. Which means they'll either throw some money at this to keep it from eye bleeding quality to keep it marketable or they'll cannibalize the budget because they know it'll sell anyways (short of Aku no Hana tier badness).

While I'm not a huge fan of the story, I don't have a huge problem on a production level.

That'll be on my watch list for tonight, caught up with a lot of the new shows last night though.

Love Live is just as awesome as ever, and I'll never stop loving that show, fastest 20 minutes of the night right there.

WIXOSS killed me, in that it's everything I'd hoped it would be. "In a world where high school girls play competitive card games during lunch, MC tries to fit in with the cool kids with her starter deck that her brother bought her"
Completely.
Realistic.

Let's have fun with this.

EDIT: Mangaka: I didn't expect this from Hashihime's Synopsis, but I think it was for the better. Also Saori Hayami is just on overtime this season or something.

Yeah, you'd think they'd at least think of keeping the bare essentials.
So I guess Noto Mamiko's role isn't big enough to be episode 1, she plays some blonde elf looking girl named Firu apparently.
The art was interesting, and I didn't hate the show, so that's a good start.

Don't worry, I'm sure next episode we'll get a re-cap of the fight which will last longer than the actual "fight".
Tatsuya is so good at teasing his precious imouto.
Oh obligatory "still better than Mahou Sensou" declaration.
